Email and Newsletter Tracking in Analytics

Analytics views and sessions generated by email and newsletter campaigns that are viewed through the university's email system are not registering correctly. The university's Proofpoint URL Defense email security measure seems to be blocking the ability for links from newsletters and email campaigns to register in Google Analytics 4 as visits sourced from an email.

Campaign and newsletter distributors can specify a link's source and medium manually using UTM Parameters.

Example: https://ianrmedia.unl.edu/web-support?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email

The UTM parameters are appended with a "?" and then separated by "&". Note there are additional UTM tags that can be used.

Source

A source should refer to a specific campaign, newsletter, or email. Note that you can replace "newsletter" with a specific campaign or newsletter name like "december_2023_newsletter" using underscores to separate words.

utm_source=newsletter

Medium

The medium refers to the mode or means in which a user views or is served a link. Note that GA4 has moved to a specified list of Default Channels. For emails, users should use "email".
